About the Artist
Hi, I’m Alex — the artist behind Alex Goddard Art.
I’m a pet portrait and wildlife artist based in West Sussex, UK, creating paintings that celebrate the deep bond we share with animals. From my cosy home studio, I paint custom portraits for clients who want to capture the personality and spirit of their beloved pets.
Alongside creating artwork, I also share my journey of building a small art business — through my YouTube channel, blog, and tutorials — helping other artists learn how to grow creatively and financially.
Where it all began
My art business started in a very simple way.
In 2017, while expecting my first baby, I picked up a paintbrush again and decided to paint a portrait of my brother’s Boxer dog as a birthday gift. I shared the painting online, and to my surprise, friends and family started asking if I could paint their pets too.
What began as a small creative project quickly grew into something much bigger. Over time, commissions increased, and Alex Goddard Art slowly developed into a small business built around my love of animals and painting.
My signature style
My aim isn’t just to create a photorealistic copy of a photo.
Instead, I focus on capturing the personality and emotion of each animal. Clients often tell me that my paintings feel like their pet has truly been brought to life on canvas — and that’s always the greatest compliment.
Every portrait is painted carefully by hand, and I work closely with clients to understand their pet’s character so the final artwork feels meaningful and personal.
Many of the portraits I create are also memorial pieces, which makes the process even more special. Pets are family members, and it’s a real privilege to create something that honours their memory.
Sharing What I’ve Learned
As my art business grew, I realised many other artists were trying to figure out the same things I had struggled with — how to price their work, find clients, and turn creativity into a sustainable income.
That’s why I started sharing more behind-the-scenes insights into my business.
