When people think about running an art business, they usually picture the painting part — the creative, expressive side of things.
But in reality, a huge part of being an artist (especially if you sell your work) is everything that happens around the art: packaging, shipping, protecting your work, and creating a professional experience for your customers.
Over time, I’ve found myself reordering the same supplies again and again — the things that quietly keep my studio running. These might not be glamorous, but they make a huge difference.
I use brown kraft envelopes for all of my cards. They’re simple, sturdy, and give everything a consistent, cohesive look. Sometimes the most basic option ends up being the most effective.
If you sell greeting cards, bookmarks, or small prints, hardback envelopes are essential. They protect your work in transit and instantly make your packaging feel more professional and reliable.
Switching to paper tape was one of those small upgrades that made a big difference. It’s more environmentally friendly than plastic tape, and it gives parcels a more premium, thoughtful finish.
Glassine bags are perfect for packaging bookmarks. They look far better than plastic sleeves and feel more in line with a considered, eco-conscious brand.
A total game changer. Thermal shipping labels are self-adhesive, so there’s no need for extra tape, and they make fulfilling orders much quicker and easier — especially when you’re packing multiple orders at once.
If you’re wrapping original artwork, this is non-negotiable. Acid-free tissue helps protect the surface of your work and prevents damage over time. It’s a small detail that shows care.
For larger prints, rigid mailers are my go-to. They’re sturdy, easy to use, and give me peace of mind that the artwork will arrive safely.
I always keep spares of these in the studio. It saves so much time (and stress) when preparing framed pieces to ship.
For some reason, spray varnish is something I always end up ordering on Amazon rather than from an art shop. It’s a staple in my process and something I never like to run out of.
